Benchmarking Overview

SDX benchmarks every building against up to six international standards using a single data submission. There is no additional configuration, no extra fees, and no duplicate data entry. Submit your utility data once and receive scores across every applicable framework.

How benchmarking works

  1. You submit data — Utility readings, floor area, use type, and occupancy details flow into SDX via manual entry, CSV upload, automated feeds, or API. See Submitting Data.
  2. SDX normalises — Readings are converted to common units, weather-normalised where required, and aligned to each standard's reporting period.
  3. Peer groups form — Buildings are grouped by use type, climate zone, and size band to produce fair comparisons.
  4. Scores are calculated — Each applicable standard's algorithm runs against your normalised data.
  5. Results appear — Scores, percentile ranks, and letter grades are available on your dashboard within minutes of a data update.

Not every standard applies to every building. SDX automatically determines which standards are relevant based on the building's location, use type, and available data. See Benchmarking Standards for methodology details.

Data quality matters

Benchmark accuracy depends on the quality of the underlying data. SDX assigns a Data Quality Grade to every building. Buildings with higher grades receive more reliable scores and are weighted more heavily in aggregate indices.

Benchmarking is free

All benchmarking features are included in the free SDX platform. There are no premium tiers, no per-building charges, and no feature gates. Every contributor — whether they manage one building or ten thousand — gets the same benchmarking capabilities.

What you can do with benchmark results

  • Compare buildings within your portfolio and against the broader market
  • Track year-on-year performance and set reduction targets
  • Generate compliance reports for regulators and voluntary frameworks
  • Share scores with investors, lenders, and tenants via exportable certificates
  • Feed scores into your ESG reporting through the API
